5 tips to transform your outdoor entertaining area this summer

By Anton Mathew

Make it bright!

As the daylight starts to fade, you’ll want to make sure you introduce plenty of lighting into your outdoor area; there’s an abundance of options to choose from when it comes to outdoor lighting. Try mixing and matching different lighting types for a bright unique effect.

Candles: A classic choice for outdoor lighting. You can choose from tea light candles in glass jars, pillar candles for tables, outdoor glass lanterns or floating water candles.

Paper lanterns: An inexpensive option that can create unique pattern lighting effects. Drape them between your trees or around patio posts to add a soft atmospheric light to the area.

String lights: Fairy lights are a simple addition, creating a stunning and bright light that feels a bit magical. Create patterns or casually drape it around your space, try forming a net, bundling them into mason jars, or coiling them through the centrepiece.

Solar lights: Scattering solar lights around the garden that automatically turn on as soon as it becomes darker and they glow beautifully. Finding pattern solar lights can create a beautiful pattern across your yard.

Keep refreshed

For an alternative to your standard esky, a bar cart or drinks station can be easy to set up on its own table that is accessible to all guests. Layout everything needed for guests to mix their delicious drinks: glasses, ice, spirits, and cocktail shaker, mixers, garnishing fruits, straws and swizzle sticks. Having a bar cart can also be used indoors for entertaining in winter.

Tableware

Put that extra little bit of effort and thought into setting your table and the results can go a long way when it comes to outdoor entertaining. Finding bright summer colours can create an inviting and fun atmosphere for your guests.

Layering your table cloths and placemats adds depth and elegance to the table.

If you are after a disposable option, try to use eco-friendly items. Biodegradable cutlery and plates look much better than plastic.

Warm up the night

Summer nights can sometimes become cool very quickly. Outdoor heaters are a significant investment, or a fire pit is a beautiful addition to any backyard and gives the feel of a cosy campfire when it’s lit up during an outdoor gathering.

A fire pit is easy to maintain and can be used all year round for summer and winter entertaining.

Comfort

Blankets or throws placed over chairs will also allow your visitors to use to warm up without having to stand by the fire or heater.

Having seat cushions allows guests to sit comfortably whilst enjoying the night. Seat cushions come in many different colours and patterns; try to match them to your tableware for an effective theme.
